The Rock Properties Database is a collaborative Geoscience BC project among Mira Geoscience, the Geological Survey of Canada and CAMIRO. This database brings together geophysical and geological information into a common format, facilitating interpretation of rock properties and corresponding geological descriptions across the geological areas of British Columbia. This fully operative web-based system provides a single database for all rock property data allowing aggregation of large amounts of data and in-depth analysis of rock property relationships.

The rock property data for 13,555 sites (and continuously growing) are available as three layers on MapPlace and MapPlace 2. The layers display magnetic susceptibility, density, and electrical conductivity measurements. The sites are also linked to detailed reports and downloads as well as metadata, publications about the data, and the Mira Geoscience website.

A 2018 version of the Canadian Rock Physical Property Database is available from GSC Open File 8460:

Additional Information

Access to physical rock properties is a primary requirement to model geophysics of rocks under cover. Mira Geoscience, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and CAMIRO developed a fully operative, web-based and populated National Rock Property Database System (RPDS). Objectives of this project are: - enter a significant amount of BC data into the system including all existing well-log data; - set up a rock property database for the Central BC Priority MPB study area; - set up a database for the southern BC study area for Targeted Geoscience Initiative 3; - carry out initial analysis and demonstrate applied use of the data at UBC under direction of Nigel Phillips and the GSC in collaboration with Mira Geoscience; and - hold a workshop for the BC Industry to explain the rock property database system and its application to modeling and interpretation of regional geophysics.
