This geospatial dataset contains the results of Archaeological Overview Assessment (AOA) studies for large areas of the province. AOA studies compile existing knowledge about recorded archaeological site locations, historical First Nations' land use, and cultural and environmental factors that are likely to affect the potential for site location. This information is used to build a model of where archaeological sites are expected to be located. The AOA dataset contains the results of studies from several sources:

• AOAs completed under Forest Renewal BC in the 1990s;

• AOAs funded by the Forest Investment Account that are of general applicability;

• AOAs conducted by local governments since 2007; and,

• An AOA prepared for the Oil and Gas Commission (Archaeological Overview of Northeastern British Columbia).

Reports, maps, and metadata for individual AOA studies can be found on the AOA Metadata page on the Archaeology Branch website under “More Information” below. To find additional information about a study in the layer, point identify the AOA layer, and use the Study Id number to find the corresponding study on the AOA Metadata page.

Data and Resources

Dataset Extent

Latitude: 48.0° to 60.0°
Longitude: -139.5° to -113.5°

Additional Information

Purpose

The purpose of this dataset is to support land-use decisions regarding the potential for unidentified archaeological resources.

Data Quality

Accuracy varies depending on date and quality of AOA study. Please consult the web-page linked below to access reports for AOA studies. Polygons are model-based and not field-verified. Provincial coverage is partial; many areas of the province have not undergone an AOA.

Object Description

Object Name: WHSE_ARCHAEOLOGY.RAAD_AOA_PROVINCIAL

Short Name: RAAD_AOAPR

Column Name Short Name Data Type Data Precision Comments
POTENTIAL POTENTIAL VARCHAR2 4 Indicates the potential of encountering archaeological resources within the polygon. Potential or risk is expressed in relative terms as “HIGH” or “MOD” (moderate) potential. Low potential polygons are not part of the dataset.
STUDY STUDY VARCHAR2 6 The abbreviated AOA study name, corresponding to a metadata record on the BC Archaeology Branch website.
STUDY_ID STUDY_ID NUMBER 5 A unique ID matching the particular AOA study that created the potential polygon.  Unique IDs correspond to metadata records on the BC Archaeology Branch website.
PERMIT PERMIT VARCHAR2 8 The permit number that each AOA study was conducted under, when applicable.
GEOMETRY GEOMETRY SDO_GEOMETRY 1 GEOMETRY is the column used to reference the spatial coordinates defining the feature.
OBJECTID OBJECTID NUMBER 38 OBJECTID is a required attribute of feature classes and object classes in a geodatabase.
SE_ANNO_CAD_DATA BLOB 4000 SE_ANNO_CAD_DATA is a binary column used by spatial tools to store annotation, curve features and CAD data when using the SDO_GEOMETRY storage data type.
FEATURE_AREA_SQM FEAT_AREA NUMBER 19 FEATURE_AREA_SQM is the system calculated area of a two-dimensional polygon in square meters
FEATURE_LENGTH_M FEAT_LEN NUMBER 19 FEATURE_LENGTH_M is the system calculated length or perimeter of a geometry in meters
