Licensed under Access Only

This spatial layer contains polygons depicting the location and extent of all archaeological sites and historic places recorded in the BC Provincial Inventory. Only a limited set of attributes is included. Due to the sensitivity of archaeological site locations, access is provided to authorized users only.

Additional Information

Purpose

Archaeology Branch makes this layer available to authorized users via iMapBC and RAAD (Remote Access to Archaeological Data application) in order to facilitate the protection and conservation of archaeological sites protected under the Heritage Conservation Act. Non-protected archaeological sites (e.g., legacy sites, sites in federal jurisdiction) and historic places (both formally recognized and non-formally recognized) are included in this layer in order to provide a complete data set of all sites in the Provincial Inventory.

Data Quality

Please note the following data accuracy and completeness issues:

(1) This layer is updated every Saturday.

(2) The layer only contains sites that have been recorded and submitted to the Archaeology Branch or Heritage Branch. It is possible that unknown and unrecorded sites exist within any area of interest.

(3) Site locations are approximate, and accuracy is dependent on the quality and scale at which sites were recorded.

(4) Only a limited set of attributes is included in this layer (see below).

Object Description

Object Name: WHSE_ARCHAEOLOGY.RAAD_SITES_ALL_SV

Comments: Spatial view containing boundaries and key attribues of all known archaeological sites and historic places recorded in the Heritage Resource Inventory Application (HRIA). Sites are uniquely identified by their Borden Number.

Column Name Short Name Data Type Data Precision Comments
BORDENNUMBER VARCHAR2 13 BORDENNUMBER is a user maintained unique identification number. This is a primary key. In Canada, all archaeological sites are coded by what is known as the "Borden System". It assigns each location a sequence of 4 letters [DcRu] and a number [4] relating to a fixed map code. This is known as the Borden Number.
SITE_NAMES VARCHAR2 1000 SITE NAMES is the name(s) of the site. A site can be known by a multiple names. For example, it may have an aboriginal place name, a name assigned by an ethnologist, a name commonly used by people in the area, as well as the standard geographic name noted on the map. More than one known site name can be included in this field separated by '|', e.g., Single Animal|Sun and Moons.
SITE_TYPOLOGIES VARCHAR2 2000 SITE TYPOLOGIES is the description(s) of the site typology. The categories for site typology description are in the Archaeology Branch Site Form Guide. More than one description can be included in this field separated by '|', e.g., TRADITIONAL USE,Culturally Modified Tree,bark-stripped,large rectangular scar|TRADITIONAL USE,Culturally Modified Tree,aboriginally-logged,planked|TRADITIONAL USE,Culturally Modified Tree,aboriginally-logged,undercut.
CREATION_DATE DATE 7 CREATION DATE is the date generated by the system when the site was digitized in HRIA and assigned a Borden Number.
ISHERITAGESITE VARCHAR2 1 ISHERITAGESITE Indicates if a site is a heritage site or an archaeological site. Heritage sites are denoted as Y or N. Archaeological sites are denoted as NULL.
REGISTRATIONSTATUS VARCHAR2 20 REGISTRATIONSTATUS Indicates the registration status. There are 5 options that can be chosen from a drop-down list to populate this column: Decision Pending, Federal Jurisdiction, Legacy, Registered, and Registry Candidate.
BRANCH_RESPONSIBILITY VARCHAR2 20 BRANCH RESPONSIBILITY can be either 'Archaeology' (when ISHERITAGESITE value is NULL) or 'Heritage' (when ISHERITAGESITE is 'Y' or 'N') .
SITE_PARENT_BORDENNUMBER VARCHAR2 13 SITE PARENT BORDENNUMBER contains the Borden number of the parent site, if applicable. The parent site retains a link with child records to track past relationships between sites, e.g., 5202.
APPROVAL_FLAG VARCHAR2 20 APPROVAL FLAG can have one of 3 options, i.e., Approved (Project Officer Approved), INV Reviewed (Inventory Reviewed), or NEW (Site has been added or updated but not approved by the Branch). The NEW option is entered automatically by the system when new or updated site information is added; Branch staff must switch the flag to Approved or INV Reviewed after the information has been verified.
FEATURE_AREA_SQM NUMBER 19 FEATURE AREA SQM is the system calculated area of a two-dimensional polygon in square meters.
FEATURE_LENGTH_M NUMBER 19 FEATURE LENGTH M is the system calculated length or perimeter of a geometry in meters.
SHAPE SDO_GEOMETRY 64 SHAPE is the column used to reference the spatial coordinates defining the feature.
OBJECTID NUMBER 38 OBJECTID is a column required by spatial layers that interact with ESRI ArcSDE. It is populated with unique values automatically by SDE.
SE_ANNO_CAD_DATA BLOB 4000 SE ANNO CAD DATA is a binary column used by spatial tools to store annotation, curve features and CAD data when using the SDO_GEOMETRY storage data type.
