A spatial representation of the general distribution of wild mountain sheep (bighorn and thinhorn sheep) in British Columbia. Populations that extend into neighbouring provinces and states are also included.

The distribution polygons are divided by species into bighorn and thinhorn sheep.

Additional Information

Purpose

The dataset was developed to coordinate and maintain the distribution of bighorn and thinhorn sheep in BC based on historical knowledge and population monitoring data.

This dataset is intended to:

  • document current distribution of wild sheep in BC;
  • support the development of science-based zones around wild sheep range to support a provincial regulatory framework that limits or excludes domestic sheep from high risk areas;
  • support awareness and monitoring of disease outbreaks that affect wild sheep across western North America; and
  • as an outreach and stewardship tool to help minimize the impacts of domestic sheep and goat farms adjacent to wild sheep populations and range.
Data Quality

The data does not include specific occurrence records of bighorn and thinhorn sheep in the province, rather it shows their generalized distribution.

  • There are no population estimates, abundance, or trend data associated with the spatial data;
  • There are no underlying ecological attributes; and
  • This dataset delineates currently occupied habitat, not the historical extent of sheep range in BC.
Lineage Statement

The dataset was built using core home range data and then generalized to include additional areas beyond the core use areas.
