Operational fuel management is defined as the process of changing forest fuel to reduce aggressive fire behaviour. This may include treatments such as thinning, spacing and pruning trees, and removal of needles and woody debris from the forest floor. The intent is to reduce fuel load in the forest and reduce the potential for devastating wildfires. The Operational Fuel Treatment program assists local governments and First Nations to undertake operational fuel treatments that are set out in a prescription for areas identified as priorities in the Community Wildfire Protection/Resiliency Plan (CWPP/CWRP). The primary objective of the program is to maximize the number of hectares treated in areas that pose the greatest risk of wildfire to communities.

The Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) program is intended to reduce the risk and impact of wildfire to communities in BC through community funding, supports and priority fuel management activities on provincial Crown land. Under the program more than 120 First Nations and local governments have received funding. The CRI Program, launched in 2018, is an evolution of the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) that ran 2004-2017. There are two delivery and funding mechanisms within CRI: FireSmart Community Funding and Supports (FCFS), and Crown Land Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR), launched in 2019.

The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), First Nations’ Emergency Services Society (FNESS) and the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) are working with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development (FLNRORD), represented by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), to administer the FireSmart Community Funding & Supports portion of the program for local government and First Nation applicants."

Operational: Operational projects are what have been completed operationally on the ground. This may, or may not, be the same as the Prescribed project area (if one exists). Demonstration: Demonstration projects are what have been completed specifically under FireSmart for publicly owned buildings or publicly and provincially owned critical infrastructure that is designated for emergency response.
INTAKE_YEAR INTK_YR NUMBER 4 The 4-digit year funding was applied for the project. This does not necessarily correspond with the year the treatment or prescription occurred.
