British Columbia has conducted an annual Major Primary Timber Processing Facilities Survey (Mill List Survey) since 1991. The survey gathers operational information on various mill types across the province. Please check the website below for more information about the survey: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/forestry/competitive-forest-industry/forest-industry-economics/fibre-mill-information/major-timber-processing-facilities-survey

Based on the latest province-published survey data, GEOBC, DataBC, and the Economic Services Branch together developed the Major Timber Processing Facilities dataset to show the location and the estimated annual capacity of each operational or presumably operational mill in the province.

Additional Information

Purpose

Provide a spatial compilation of all open or presumed open primary timber processing facilities in British Columbia (BC), allowing users to conduct various analyses that require accurate facility location and operational information.

Data Quality

The dataset is based upon the best information available and received at the time of the mill survey. The limitations of this dataset include: (1) The Mill List Survey does not survey secondary manufacturing facilities (e.g. millwork, engineered wood products, Reman products, cabinet, etc.) in BC. (2) Based on Mill List Survey responses, mills are classified as a) open with the response, b) presumed open without response, c) did not operate at all during the year (temporary or indefinite closure) or d) closed (permanently). This dataset is derived from mills in category a) and b). Mills that have announced permanent closure in a certain survey year are recorded as category a) for that year. (3) Some coordinates may not reflect the precise mill locations but may refer to the closest community. (4) The annual capacity is estimated based on the same standard operating assumption for each mill (number and duration of shifts and days per year). Actual mill production can be higher or lower than estimated capacity if a mill runs on a different operating schedule than assumed here. Therefore, while capacity provides guidance on mill output, it is not a measure of the actual production level of the mill.
