The Canadian Rental Housing Index (http://rentalhousingindex.ca/) is a comprehensive database of rental housing statistics, providing information for renter households in over 800 municipalities and regional districts across B.C. and the rest of Canada. All of the information contained in the Index is derived from a Statistics Canada custom tabulation based on the 2016 long-form census.

The Index includes various data for renter households, such as:

  • Average and median incomes
  • Average rents
  • Renter households spending 30% and 50% or more of their income on shelter
  • Income quartiles
  • Bedroom sizes
  • Suitability (overcrowding)
  • Demographic information for Indigenous renters, families, seniors and youth, and immigrants

Data Quality

Please note that while the current iteration of the Index only shows information for municipalities that have over 500 renter households, BCNPHA’s custom dataset contains information for every Census Subdivision in B.C., along with additional variables such as home ownership.
