In order to comply with the Wildlife Act, hunters must have certain game species inspected by a provincial inspector. The compulsory inspection (CI) database contains information that is collected during these inspections. The CI data is presented at the management unit level and spans the period of record from 1900 to current. The species required to be inspected changes over time and varies by region, so not all species are represented in the dataset for the full period of record or for the entire province. The user should consult the CI website for the current list of species requiring inspection.

General Disclaimer:
The Province of BC does not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the information provided. Human error in either recording, reporting, or transcribing the information could have occurred.

Management Unit:
There may be errors in the reported Management Unit (MU), particularly in records prior to 1990. For example, it might appear as though an animal was killed in a particular MU when that species does not occur there. These errors are typically due to human error in either recording and reporting the MU, or in the transcription of the information from the paper Compulsory Inspection form to the database.

Age:
Age is reported in years (if known) and is determined from different aging techniques. From highest to lowest, the priority of aging techniques is as follows:
- For Mountain Goat and Sheep: 1) tooth, 2) horn, 3) wearstain, or 4) other
- For all other species: 1) tooth, 2) wearstain, or 3) other
If age cannot be derived from the above techniques or an exact age is not know, an age class of Juvenile (code 66) or Adult (code 99) is assigned.
