Licensed under Access Only

This spatial view contains information about known fossil occurrence sites in British Columbia. Both macrofossils and microfossils are included. Macrofossils are fossils large enough to see with the naked eye, while microfossils are fossils not visible to the naked eye and require a microscope to study. The spatial view includes details regarding the significance of the fossils at each site. Fossil site inventory and collection have been undertaken by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) who provided the province with their data. This is a point feature dataset that will be augmented with additional sites as information and fossil collections become available. Fossil occurrence sites are reported by amateur and professional paleontologists, researchers and authorized industrial activities on Crown land.

Additional Information

Purpose

It is intended to inform government of the location of known fossil sites and occurrences in BC for decision-making and resource management purposes. The data is also intended to provide consultants (upon written request and signing of data sharing agreement) with site location information to assist in the assessment of potential impact of proposed activities on the fossil resources in BC.

Data Quality

The information is based on known fossil sites and is supplemented as more sites are discovered and information is submitted to government.

Lineage Statement

Fossil site inventory and collection have been undertaken by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) who provided the province with their data. A master database for BC has been created and is being supplemented with additional information from unpublished reports and from fossil finds reported by researchers, the public and industries.
