Growth and Yield dataset is a provincial data set that comprised of Permanent Sample Plots (PSP) And Temporary Sample Plots (TSP) data. Re-measurement cycle for PSPs in natural stands is every 10 years. TSPs are only measured at the time of establishment.

PSPs data was created to provide information on rates of growth of existing forest, mortality, and changes in stand structure from stand establishment to maturity or cutting age. PSP data is also required to develop yield tables and to provide the basic information necessary for the development and calibration of growth and yield models. The TSP data is used in the development of the Variable Density Yield Prediction (VDYP) model to fit yield functions for stands of all ages and to provide implied growth rates for mature stands with inadequate PSP coverage. TSP data is also used to fit stand level decay models to net down the predicted yields from VDYP. Forest companies continue to use TSPs to construct Average Volume Lines (AVLs) which are area weighted averages of TSP volume within a given timber types. It is also commonly used to construct Stand and Stock tables.

Lineage Statement

Originally the growth and yield data were collected on field forms and then key punched into the computer in Standard Edit Format (ASCII flat file). Currently the data is collected from the field using Handheld computer, validated using Sample Plot Tools and loaded to the GYS Oracle database.
