This dataset was developed to provide public access to information about post-1846 historic places listed on the provincial heritage register database. It does not include any information on archaeological sites. Please contact the Archaeology Branch for information on archaeological sites in British Columbia. Use of this dataset is not a substitute for contacting the Archaeology Branch.
The dataset includes selected post-1846 historic places as recorded on the provincial heritage register database, specifically those that are formally recognized for their heritage values by the province or a local government under provincial legislation (Registered) and those that are no longer formally recognized (Legacy).
The dataset also includes some post-1846 historical sites located on lands in B.C. that are under federal government jurisdiction (Federal Jurisdiction), included for convenience only. For information about federal government property, contact the Government of Canada directly.
The dataset includes basic information about all listings: Borden number (ID number), formal recognition indicator (Y or N), and Registration Status (Registered, Legacy or Federal Jurisdiction).
The dataset may also include additional information if available/applicable, e.g.: name(s), location details, highest level of formal recognition under B.C. legislation (e.g. Heritage Conservation Act, Local Government Act, Vancouver Charter, Land Act, etc.), name of government entity that formally recognized the historic place, construction year, brief description of the historic place, architect/builder and functional category.
The Recognition Type displayed for each historic place represents the highest level of formal recognition for that historic place under provincial legislation (for Registered sites), or under federal legislation (for Federal Jurisdiction sites.) Note that a historic place may have more than one type of formal recognition. Please contact Heritage Branch for further information about specific listings of interest.
Although the dataset is updated on a daily basis, it does not include every historic place formally recognized by every level of government in B.C. New listings are constantly being added to the provincial heritage register based on notifications to Heritage Branch from local governments and other government agencies. For the most current information on local government formal recognition it is best to contact the local government in which your area of interest is located.
