Important fossil areas in British Columbia consisting of polygons based on density of known fossil sites and known fossil-bearing geological layers. The boundaries of the polygons are updated as new information becomes available.

Data and Resources

Dataset Extent

Latitude: 48.0° to 60.0°
Longitude: -139.5° to -113.5°

Additional Information

Purpose

The data set was created to allow the public to see the locations of important fossil areas in the province. The data is intended to highlight areas where fossil resources are important and where fossil impact assessments should be done before activities on Crown land causing major disturbance of the bedrock are authorized to proceed.

Data Quality

The data quality is high but additional important areas are added as additional information becomes available.

Lineage Statement

The information is based on known fossil sites and potential location of fossil sites based on geological layers.

Short Name: FOSS_IMP_A
Comments: This layer contains important fossil areas in British Columbia. This is a polygon feature dataset.

Column Name Short Name Data Type Data Precision Comments
IMPORTANT_FOSSIL_AREA_ID FOSS_AR_ID VARCHAR2 10 IMPORTANT FOSSIL AREA ID is a user maintained unique polygon identification number, e.g., 8a.
AREA_NAME AREA_NAME VARCHAR2 255 AREA NAME is a name of the important fossil area, e.g., Princeton and Area basin
RANKING_CODE RANK_CODE VARCHAR2 15 RANKING CODE is a fossil ranking code in terms of importance, e.g., HIGH; LOW to HIGH
AREA_IN_HECTARES HECTARES NUMBER 10 AREA IN HECTARES is the area in hectares of the polygon, e.g., 14603.
COMMENTS COMMENTS VARCHAR2 500 COMMENTS is further information regarding the fossils and area within the polygon, e.g., Small area with numerous exposures, from which many new Tertiary age insect and plant species have been and continue to be described.
FEATURE_AREA_SQM AREA_SQM NUMBER 19 FEATURE AREA SQM is the system calculated area of a two-dimensional polygon in square meters.
FEATURE_LENGTH_M LENGTH_M NUMBER 19 FEATURE LENGTH M is the system calculated length or perimeter of a geometry in meters.
SHAPE SHAPE SDO_GEOMETRY 1 SHAPE is the column used to reference the spatial coordinates defining the feature.
OBJECTID OBJECTID NUMBER 38 OBJECTID is a column required by spatial layers that interact with ESRI ArcSDE. It is populated with unique values automatically by SDE.
SE_ANNO_CAD_DATA BLOB 4000 SE ANNO CAD DATA is a binary column used by spatial tools to store annotation, curve features and CAD data when using the SDO GEOMETRY storage data type.
