LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is a uniquely accurate method for elevation acquisition. LiDAR is an active remote sensing system as it produces its own energy for acquisition of information. LiDAR systems are made up of a laser, scanner and GNSS (GPS) receiver that are mounted onto an aircraft. These systems transmit short, high-frequency wavelengths of light to a surface, then record the time of flight and intensity of the backscatter returned to the sensor that make up a point cloud dataset. The high spatial resolution of the resulting surface models allows the differentiation of many fine terrain features.

There are four Government of British Columbia business areas and one department of the Government of Canada that are involved in working to make LiDAR data accessible through a web map portal: GeoBC, Emergency Management BC (EMBC), BC Timber Sales (BCTS), Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch (FAIB), and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

LidarBC's Open LiDAR Data Portal (see link under Data and Resources) is a web mapping initiative to provide open public access to LiDAR and associated datasets collected by the Province of British Columbia. The data presented herein is released as Open Data under the Open Government Licence – British Columbia (OGL-BC).

GeoBC is the provincial branch that is managing LidarBC's Open LiDAR Data Portal, including storage, distribution, and updates.
