Local Health Area (LHA) are administrative boundaries for the Ministry of Health. This 2018 version is an updated one with new LHA numbers to align with other Ministry geographies and and some LHA names to better represent the regional geography.

The LHAs are a mutually exclusive and exhaustive classification of the land area in BC. LHAs are contiguous (land area is geographically adjacent) and fit within an existing geographical hierarchy structure, e.g., cannot violate higher-level geography boundaries such as the Health Service Delivery Areas (HSDA) and Health Authorities (HA).

Lineage Statement

A Generalized view of this dataset available for webservices is: WHSE_ADMIN_BOUNDARIES.BCHA_LOCAL_HEALTH_AREA_SPG

In April 2019, the Ministry of Health updated some provincial health regions and introduced the Community Health Service Area (CHSA). At this time LHA numbers were changed to align with other Ministry geographies and and some LHA names were altered to better represent the regional geography.

These LHAs were based on the 1997 version, the Ministry of Health redefined the provincial health regions, prior to this date the province was divided into 80 Local Health Areas (LHA) which were used for analytical purposes. They originally evolved from school district boundaries. The LHA boundaries do not reflect any school districts boundary changes that have occurred since their inception. The Vancouver Local Health (39) has since adopted six small areas formerly called micro health areas. They number 161 through 166. Surrey LHA (36) has adopted a boundary split into 201 and 202 which contain the micro health areas of 361 through 365. The LHAs are determined on a geographic basis and have no administrative functions. Instead they aggregate up to Health Service Delivery Areas and Health Authorities (2002) and therefore areas of health care analysis.
