MINFILE contains geological, location and economic information on 14,800 metallic, industrial mineral and coal occurrences in British Columbia. The database is used by government, industry and academia for resource management, land-use planning, exploration and research.

Production is linked by the MINFILE Number, and information such as production year. Information on either ore mined (in tonnes) or ore milled (in tonnes) are captured. Commodity production is entered with precious metals quoted in grams and base metals or other commodities quoted in kilograms. If there are no figures for tonnes milled the field will be blank. Comments are added to clarify information reported in the production field for any given year. Historic production records are provided by the Mines and Minerals Division of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

MINFILE contains over 14,800 metallic, industrial mineral and coal occurrences for British Columbia. Each of these occurrences contain 84 data elements describing mineral deposits in terms of geography, geology and economics. Started out as a card file, then to VAX, then to a microcomputer application, and finally to a web-based searcheable database, with display on interactive maps.
