Forest disturbances mapped primarily by the annual provincial aerial overview survey are recorded as polygons or spots (point data). This data set represents the spot (point) data. Each spot is labelled by the year of survey, forest health factor (disturbance agent), severity class, area, numbers of trees estimated in the spot, and host. Aerial survey data standards are provided on the web at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/forestry/managing-our-forest-resources/forest-health/aerial-overview-surveys/methods.

Longitude: -139.5° to -113.5°

Additional Information

A wide range of forest management activities are influenced by this data including timber supply analysis, resource management planning, silviculture strategies, harvest planning and pest treatment programs. The data also represents the only long-term record of forest disturbances for the province which may be useful to determine trends and changes in trends due to climate change or other factors.

Data Quality

A minimum of 80% of the province's land area is flown annually. Missed areas are due to weather and smoke. A corresponding map showing GPS tracks of the areas surveyed annually provides a record of the coverage. There are errors of omission and commission and general spatial accuracy can be poor depending on a number of factors but is accurate enough to meet the main purpose of the data which is to provide general trends in disturbance size and frequency.

Lineage Statement

Data originates from the Canadian Forest Services' Forest Insect and Disease survey (FIDS) from 1907 to 1996. From 1999 to the present, all data has been collect by the province.
