This is a polygon feature class representing large, named, physiographic features (areas) in the province, e.g., mountains, mountain ranges, ridges, plateaus, hills, and valleys.

Data and Resources

Dataset Extent

Latitude: 48.0° to 60.0°
Longitude: -139.5° to -113.5°

Additional Information

Purpose

In the British Columbia Geographic Names (BCGNIS) dataset there is no way to accurately reflect the extent of large areal features in the province such as mountains, mountain ranges, ridges, plateaus, hills, and valleys since, although these names are part of the BCGNIS dataset, they are only represented by points which do not accurately reflect the location of the features.

Data Quality

Complete provincial coverage at the System level. Almost complete provincial coverage at the Primary and Secondary levels. Incomplete provincial coverage at the Tertiary and Local levels.

Lineage Statement

These physiographic areas were digitized off of line work on hard copy maps of various scales held by the BC Geographical Names Office.
