The Provincial Obstacles to Fish Passage theme presents records of all known obstacles to fish passage from several fisheries datasets. Records from the following datasets have been included: The Fisheries Information Summary System (FISS); the Fish Habitat Inventory and Information Program (FHIIP); the Field Data Information System (FDIS) and the Resource Analysis Branch (RAB) inventory studies. The main intent of this layer is to have a single layer of all known obstacles to fish passage. It is important to note that not all waterbodies have been studied and, not all lengths of many waterbodies have been studied so there are a very high number of obstacles in the real world that are not recorded in this dataset. This layer simply reports the obstacles to fish that are known. It is also very important to note that we are acknowledging these features as obstacles to fish passage versus barriers to fish passage. This is because an obstacle may be a barrier at one time of year but not at other times depending on the volume of water present and also, what is a barrier to one species of fish is not necessarily a barrier to another species.

Purpose

The purpose of the Provincial Obstacles to Fish Passage theme is to have a single source of all known obstacles to fish passage. This theme combines the obstacle data from all provincial corporate fish datasets that have obstacle information.

Lineage Statement

RAB (Resouce Information Branch) data is approximately 1970 to 1985, FHIIP (Fish Habitat Inventory & Information Program) data is approximately 1985 -1996, FDIS data (Field Data Information System) is 1996 to current date. FISS (Fisheries Information Summary System) is 1900 to current date. As all except FISS are inventory time period related, transition years could be in either data set. Eg: 1996 information could be in either FHIIP or FDIS but not both.

Comments: FISS OBSTACLE PNT SP is an instantiated POINT layer of FISS_FISH_OBSTACLES_VW from the FISS operational system. It is spatially-enabled using the UTM fields upon data load (FME). It is the collection of all "obstructions" from FISS, FHIIP, and FDIS.

UTM_ZONE UTM_ZONE NUMBER 2 UTM ZONE is the NAD83 Universal Mercator (UTM) Zone coordinate for the downstream point of this obstacle.

WATERBODY_TYPE WTRBDY_TYE VARCHAR2 20 WATERBODY TYPE is a the type of waterbody in which the obstacle was recorded. For example, Stream or Lake.
GAZETTED_NAME GZTTD_NM VARCHAR2 30 GAZETTED NAME is the gazetted name of the waterbody in which the obstacle was recorded.
NEW_WATERSHED_CODE NEW_WS_CD VARCHAR2 56 NEW WATERSHED CODE is a watershed code, formatted with dashes, as assigned in the Watershed Atlas. For example: 900-569800-08600-00000-0000-0000-000-000-000-000-000-000.
