Soil Survey polygons contain soils spatial and attribute information utilized by the Ministry of Environment online Soil Information Finder Tool (SIFT). The information pertains to soil survey data in the Province of British Columbia, as well as links to a variety of reports and maps. Polygons related to soil surveys can be made up of a complex of up to 3 components representing 3 different soil types. These components are aspatial and represent the amount in the polygon indicated by the PERCENT_x field for the component x. Each unique soil type has a soil name and generalized attributes such as drainage, texture and coarse fragment percent.

Additional Information

Purpose

Soil surveys were conducted in the 1960-1990s to inform land use planning and decisions at the provincial and regional scale. Soils surveys describe soil names that are map-able repeatable soil units. Soil attributes within each polygon are based on generalized soil name concepts and are not measured or spatially accurate soils observations. Surveys range in scale from 1:10 000 - 1:250 000

Data Quality

There are known spatial issues overlaps and gaps in the data. Topology, line work and attributes are being improved as resourcing allows.

Lineage Statement

Data was mapped on air photographs using mirror stereoscope then hand transferred to NTS and TRIM map sheets. Line work was then digitized from the hard copy maps. Data was digitized by both federal and provincial agencies. The data goes through a series of scripts through which data transformations occur, overlaps are minimized, topology and geometry is fixed and attributes are converted to the BCGW schema.
