The B.C. Conservation Data Centre's (CDC) spatial range layer is a broad-scale representation of a species' geographic distribution in British Columbia. The data are created using CDC occurrence data, other publicly available data, and expert opinion. The line work used to create the species ranges are based on Ecosections polygons. Range data generally exist for species that are at-risk in BC (e.g. red-listed, blue-listed, SARA Schedule 1, and COSEWIC Threatened or Endangered), but may be limited by the availability of accurate distribution data. New species ranges will be added to this dataset periodically, and existing ranges will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Additional Information

Purpose

These range data are intended to be used at a provincial scale. Users should not use these data as a replacement for inventory work; rather the range data can help determine potential species in an area of interest and help guide inventory efforts.

Data Quality

Range data generally exists for species that are at-risk in BC (e.g. red-listed, blue-listed, SARA Schedule 1, and COSEWIC Threatened or Endangered), but may be limited by the availability of accurate distribution data. New species ranges will be added to this dataset periodically, and existing ranges will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Lineage Statement

The line work used to create the species ranges are based on Ecosections polygons.
