The Timber Harvesting Land Base (THLB) is an estimate of the land where timber harvesting is considered both acceptable and economically feasible, given the objectives for all relevant forest values, existing timber quality, market values and applicable technology. It is a theoretical, strategic-level estimate used for timber supply analysis and could include areas that may never be harvested or may exclude areas that will be harvested. THLB is developed in-house for the South Coast Region by consolidating current THLB maintained by each of the three District Offices (i.e., Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky, and Chilliwack). It consolidates four categories: 1) Contributing (C), for areas where 100% of the polygon is available for timber harvesting; 2) Partially Contributing (P), for areas where < 100% of the polygon is available for timber harvesting; 3) Non-Contributing (N), for areas removed from the crown forest available for timber harvest, but may contribute to old growth and Wildlife Tree Reserve; and 4) Exclusion Areas (X), for areas excluded from contributing to old growth and Wildlife Tree Reserve, which are non-crown land, non-forested areas or areas designated as non-productive forest.

Spatial data was extracted from the BC Geographic Warehouse, or from the Resource District data library (non-standard) and converted to ESRI’s ArcGIS feature classes format in preparation for the timber supply analysis that ultimately determines the Timber Harvesting Land Base. The South Coast Region THLB is updated every time a Timber Supply Review is undertaken or when significant changes to the land base occur.
