An incidental wildlife observation is a recorded detection of a species or its sign that was not a part of a formal survey. This can occur when a non-focal species is observed during a survey for another species, outside of the study area, or as a chance observation made at random. Observations may include information on species, sex, age class, activity, and location. The validity of these sightings is widely variable depending on the level of expertise of the observer and how visible the animal(s) was. This dataset contains all incidental observations and is secured because it may contain information on a species that in the opinion of the Director, Ecosystems Branch or a Regional Environmental Stewardship manager could reasonably be expected to result in damage to the species, the residence of a species or the population, or interfere with the conservation of that species at risk, if it were publicly disclosed.

Additional Information

Purpose

The dataset was created to provide better information for wildlife management. The intent on having a central repository for inventory data is to facilitate the storage and access of inventory results needed to make informed management decisions.

Lineage Statement

Data from inventories conducted all over the province has either been directly entered into the SPI_DC data capture tool or uploaded to it using a MS Excel Template Tool and MS Access Import Tool.
