This spatial view contains the Province of British Columbia’s publicly available ungulate survey observations originating from the Species Inventory (SPI) database. An observation is made when a surveyor makes a visit to a Design Component (block, transect, sample station) on a specific date at a specific time and enumerates the target species or its sign. Observations may include information on count, species, sex, age class, activity, and survey conditions. Observations may result from various survey methodologies, such as stratified random block, distance sampling, reconnaissance, mark-resight, wildlife camera traps, pellet group counts, and snow tracking. Each observation may be geo-referenced individually or by association with a specific Design Component

Some observations are not presented in this layer because they are secured in accordance with the Species and Ecosystems Data and Information Security Policy.

Additional Information

Purpose

The dataset was created to provide better information for wildlife management and the protection of biodiversity. The intent on having a central repository for species inventory data is to facilitate the storage and access of inventory data and results required to make informed management decisions.

Data Quality

The data presented here only represent those which have been submitted to the Species Inventory (SPI) database and have been quality assured to meet Provincial data standards. This dataset does not represent all wildlife surveys that have been conducted in the Province of BC.
